    • Time Commitment: 6 weeks (July-Mid August)
    • Demographics: Grade 11 Students living north of Red Deer
    • Program Objective(s): “Increase awareness and interest in research & innovation (R&I) careers - particularly at the intersection of health and emerging technologies”
    • Look Forward To: Lunch n Learns, Meeting of the Minds, Networking with previous HYRS alumni and professionals in the research and innovation fields, program end symposium (poster presentation style)
  • Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, and Technology (WISEST): Click For More Info
    • Location: University of Alberta
    • Time Commitment: 6 weeks (July-Mid August)
    • Demographics: Grade 11 students identifying as women or gender-queer
    • Program Objective(s): “Advancing diversity while empowering women in STEM”
    • Look Forward To: Lunch n Learns, social events outside of work hours, campus tours, program end poster symposium (poster presentation style), WISEST Youth Council, WISEST SET Conference

    • Location: University of Alberta (Edmonton Chapter)
    • Time Commitment: 10 weeks (late January-April)*
    • Demographics: Grade 10-12 Students
    • Program Objective(s): “[Connecting] hundreds of motivated students to conduct meaningful, self-directed research projects that contribute to nationwide scientific advancements.”
    • Look Forward To: Mentorship with URL, networking with other like-minded high school students, learning to use R software, program end chapter symposium, manuscript writing, potential to attend national symposium, opportunity to get published, etc.

Resources for Undergraduate Students

  • Indigenous Mentorship and Paid Research Experience for Summer Students (IMPRESS): Click For More Info
    • Location: McGill University
    • Time Commitment: 8 weeks (June-July)
    • Demographics: First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Undergraduate Students in Quebec and in the rest of the country
    • Program Objectives: “[IMPRESS] aims to strengthen their research skills, boost their career-readiness, and expose them to pathways to graduate school, through activities that help them build their skill sets and connect with peers.”
    • Look Forward To: Connecting with your graduate student mentor and host professor for advice, guidance, and training, professional and leadership development workshops, social and cultural activities, journaling about your experience
  • Science Internship Program (SIP): Click For More Info
    • Location: Companies based in Canada
    • Time Commitment: 4, 8, 12, or 16 months
    • Eligibility: Students in the Faculty of Science, Faculty of ALES, and Campus St. Jean
    • Program Features: Full-time, paid work experience
    • Program Recognition: Successful completion leads to a Science Internship Program designation, which appears on the student’s academic transcript and degree parchment

  • Experiential Learning in Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (ELITE) Program for Black Youth: Click For More Info
    • Location: University of Alberta in partnership with External Internship Programs
    • Time Commitment: 8-16 Weeks Depending on the Internship Placement
    • Demographics: Black High School and Undergraduate Students aged 15-22
    • Program Objectives: “[E]nable Black Youth to develop hands-on skills that will be immediately transferable to disruptive technologies, including robotics, automation, advanced manufacturing, and tissue engineering.”
    • Look Forward To: Leadership/entrepreneur training, interactive counselling for resilience and managing the demands of professional careers, professional development opportunities, possibility of work experience or co-op education credits
